In Savoie, the wild cat is back after a century of absence
The wild cat was spotted last April in the Bauges massif in Savoie.
He is back ! After a century of absence, the wild cat, also nicknamed the little tiger of the woods, has been spotted in the Bauges massif, located between Chambéry and Albertville in Savoie.
“The ecosystem is healthy”
As revealed by Le Parisien, the wildcat was spotted last April. The meeting could be immortalized thanks to camera traps located at an altitude of 1,500 m “initially used for monitoring the wolf and the lynx”, explains to the daily Richard Cousin, project manager for the natural environment in the park.
The presence of the wild cat is very good news: “This means that the ecosystem is in good health, because it provides the wild cat with the food necessary for its permanent installation on the territory”, specifies the professional.
Official protection from 1981
Hunted for its fur and victim of the detection of its habitat, this “big cat” of 50 cm and which could reach 5 kg had disappeared at the beginning of the 20th century.
It was not until 1981 that the animal was able to benefit from official protection in France.
