Nestled at the end of the business area behind Burger King, in Impasse François Cevert, the Humane Society shelter (SPA) welcomes abandoned, seized or lost animals since 1974 to The rock on yon.
On this verdant oasis of several hectares, four kennels partly rehabilitated this year and an infirmary for animals, welcome 400 animals each year, mainly dogs and cats. The place is open to the public 7 days a week, every afternoon.
400 animals per year
In recent years, there has been an upsurge in New Pets (NAC), ferrets or rabbits that people do not want to keep. We welcome them drop by drop according to our possibilities.
Arrived on the Vendée site in 2016, this Challandaise by adoption carefully watches over her four-legged residents, as do the seven employees and the forty volunteers who gravitate around the structure.
A triple mission
Their mission is threefold: serve as a pound for lost or found animals. “A dozen municipalities, including La Roche-sur-Yon, have an agreement with our refuge, which allows us to accommodate stray or runaway animals found on the perimeter of cities”, explains Valérie Pornet.
After a while, these animals come to feed the shelter and are offered for adoption.
The summer of abandonment
The second mission is to recover animals that owners no longer want. For all sorts of reasons, people abandon their animals : behavior of the animal, financial situation of the household, divorce, health problem or allergy…
“Summer is also a systematically critical period: people who take a dog or a cat have not necessarily anticipated the management of the holidays, the organization that this implies. In the summer, abandonments are more frequent”, points out the manager, who recalls that taking an animal is not a trivial act.
The season of births, in cats, also rhymes with the first heat of summer. the cat sterilization deficit results in filling the kennel each season.
At the moment, the cat flaps are abnormally empty for the time but we fear the next few weeks…
However, three little kittens a few weeks old are waiting in the infirmary for their departure to relay families. “We are always looking for families capable of taking care of kittens during weaning”.
Finding the right pet for the right adopter
Finally, the main mission of the SPA is to provide animals – all vaccinated and sterilized – to adoption. Find the right pet for the right adopter. “That’s our job: knowledge of our animals, experience, analysis allow us to find the right partner. »
A questionnaire is submitted to adoption candidates to help find cohesion with the animal.
“We are not going to give a Malinois who needs mental exercise, games, and work to a family in an apartment”, underlines Valérie Pornet.
Often, large dogs and category dogs have a harder time finding buyers. They are also the most numerous at the refuge. Around 30 dogs are currently waiting for a home.
The new regulations that will prohibit pet stores from selling dogs and cats should come into force in 2024.
“We are nearing the end of impulse buying and this is good news for the animals and for our shelter. Here, we accompany people towards adoption, we give them advice, we guide them towards understanding their animal. »
A service made possible thanks to the professionalization of the staff in recent years.
