Animal wandering: “I lost nearly €25,000, but it touches the heart more than the wallet”, explains Serge, a breeder

New attack of stray dogs in Reunion, horses were killed in the heights of Sainte-Rose. Farms are regularly the target of these attacks. 4 years ago, there were an estimated 73,000 stray dogs in public spaces in Reunion.

A dog attack is once again in the news. Serge’s horses, breeders in the heights of Sainte-Rose, were once again attacked by dogs. The breeder had already lost two horses last April.

Financially we take a hit, but when we see that, it touches the heart more than the wallet. If I really count the losses I’ve had lately, we’re between 20,000 and 25,000 euros“, laments the breeder.

Angry Breeders

A little further on, the same scenario happened with Serge’s neighbour. Chicken carcasses litter the ground. Last Monday, Éric lost around fifty poultry. The breeder is desperate, it’s the second attack in 6 months.

How to act, how to attack these dogs? Are there really effective traps for them? I don’t know if we should act on our own, in any case, we are very angry“, explains Éric, breeder.

Attacks on farms have multiplied in recent months. In Saint-André a stray cat devoured two fawns last week. On Monday, chickens were devoured at the Ravine des Cabris.

Strong measures

For the trade unionist Dominique Clain, strong measures must be taken, like the prefecture of Mayotte which authorizes the slaughter of stray dogs by firearm. “Killing is a solution, but the owners of these dogs should be punished more. These Dogs Don’t Go Stray On Their Own“, says the trade unionist.

For the moment, the prefecture does not wish to adopt this measure. “It is not envisaged to authorize private individuals or wolf-keepers to shoot stray dogs. In terms of the fight against animal wandering, the state decided in 2017 to support the action of the five local intermunicipal structures, and finances a three-year plan to the tune of 735,000 euros.“, indicates the prefecture.

Other solutions

On the contrary, animal defense associations believe that these attacks can be stemmed by other means. “The education of the population, to fight against the reproduction of dogs and against abandonment. Euthanasia can only be considered as a last resort, when the animals are extremely dangerous, when they have returned to the wild“, Cécile Squarzoni, President of Apeba.

The Prefecture has identified nearly 73,000 stray dogs on our territory. On average, 8,000 dogs are captured by the pound. The vast majority are then euthanized.
