The mutation continues for the Matabiau lock house at Toulouse. Imagined for several years and materialized last summer with the installation of an ephemeral ginguettethe rehabilitation project for this piece of history located below the Matabiau bridge is taking a new turn with the definitive opening of a restaurant : the Musette muzzle.
A historical revival
A landmark for lock keepers for decades and until 1970, the Maison éclusière Matabiau had several lives before becoming a restaurant. Now state property, it was rebuilt in the 18th century following the consolidation of the canal and also served as a warehouse for the city’s green spaces. Abandoned thereafter, it now regains activity after years of uncertainty.
“We have made a little cocoon of it”, welcomes Xavier Wasser, co-manager of the establishment located at 88, boulevard Pierre Semard, in the Marengo district.
Following the opening of the ginguette in June 2021, the whole team had to resolve to postpone the planned developments inside the building. “It was an empty shell,” explains the Toulousain. It took six months to complete all the work and bring the Matabiau lock house up to safety standards. Bar, fitted kitchen, storage space… all the finishing work has been carried out over the past few weeks, until the official opening on Tuesday May 24, 2022.
“The big novelty, unlike last year, is that we also receive customers indoors. It also allows us to be less dependent on the weather. »
Cathedral ceiling, Toulouse bricks and raw materials, the interior space has this little cachet imagined by the management team during the rise of the project.
Open at noon
Now, the 80m2 establishment can accommodate up to 40 seats inside and 150 outside. The open-air space, particularly peaceful, allows you to enjoy a nice sunny moment or even to be protected by the poplars at the edge of the water.
Unlike last summer, the Maison éclusière Matabiau opens its doors at lunchtime “with a menu respecting the principles of seasonality” and bistro-type dishes “at an affordable price”.
Le Museau Musette is open Tuesday to Friday, from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m., and Tuesday to Sunday, from 7:00 p.m. to 1:30 a.m.
88 boulevard Pierre Semard – 31500 Toulouse.
